MOSI (MediYoga Standardised Intervention) has been developed through research and proven experience since 1997.

MOSI's framework includes exercises and programmes of Mindfulness, Breathing Training, Movement Training and Meditation Training. 

MOSI is evidence-based, effective, adaptable and accessible, applicable, standardised and generalisable.

Background & Development

Origin and definition: Yoga, which originated 5000 years ago, derives from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj' meaning 'to unite'. Classical Yoga, according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, comprises eight elements known as 'the eightfold path of Yoga'. There are hundreds of different forms of yoga.

Yoga is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage and by the United Nations for its holistic health benefits. Yoga promotes harmony and is effective in health promotion, disease prevention and management of lifestyle-related diseases.

Yoga Therapy
Defined by the WHO-GCTM as the application of yogic principles to physical, physiological, psychological, social and spiritual well-being.

Contemporary View: The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) describes yoga therapy as a process that empowers individuals to improve their health through yoga teachings and practices. 

Medical Yoga
Institute of Medical Yoga (IMY): Founded in Sweden in 1997, initiated Medical Yoga, a therapeutic form of yoga inspired by kundalini yoga and traditional yoga therapy. Medical yoga refers to the use of yoga practices to prevent and treat medical conditions.

Development: In 2010, the term MediYoga was adopted, marking a collaboration in Sweden between academia, the Institute and health professionals to study its effects. Studies show that MediYoga improves quality of life, reduces depression in heart failure patients, lowers blood pressure in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and relieves stress and back pain.

MOSI Framework
Need for standardisation: Long-term implementation of MediYoga highlighted the need for a robust framework and methodology. SIMY and the Academy therefore developed the MediYoga Standardised Intervention (MOSI) framework.

Key factors: Evidence-based, applicable, effective, adaptable and accessible. The framework makes it standardised and generalisable.

The MOSI framework respects the holistic nature of yoga and aims to support further research.
